Oxfords - a formal shoe with the lace tabs sewn underneath the vamp which is known as closed lacing.
Usually with a seam across the toe, but variations occur.
The style was developed in the mid 1800s, allegedly at Oxford University, from the currently
fashionable Balmoral boot, hence the confusion between naming them.
As with many men's fashions of the Victorian era they have crystalised into the modern male uniform.
